Help Me Grow offers services for children and their families pre-natal to age 5. The Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum is used. This is supplemental to the children and families most at-risk for abuse and neglect who demonstrate four risk factors and are not eligible for regular HMG. This program provides one-on-one parent education and direct services delivered to where the family is and focus on their unique needs. This program is offered bi-weekly or monthly at home visits with a Service Coordinator. The home visits provide the parent with age-appropriate child development information, help parents observe their own child, address parental concerns, and engage families in activities that provide a meaningful parent-child interaction. Children will also be screened with periodic health, vision, hearing and nutritional screenings. These screenings will provide early identification of developmental delays or problems which will lead to referral for follow up services.
CAP (Child Assault Prevention) is a school based curriculum which will be offered to second grade students in the Medina City School District. Classroom workshops use role plays and guided group discussion to address situations in which a child’s personal rights are violated. The workshops focus on bullying, stranger abduction and unsafe touches by a known adult. The students learn strategies to protect themselves including self-assertiveness (using your words); peer support (sticking with a friend); and telling a trusted adult (and a review of tattling vs. telling). In addition, workshops are offered for staff and parents prior to the classroom presentations.
